Garlic for Planting or Eating
STIFFNECK FARM is a small family farm located in central Maine that is owned and operated by Doug Frati. We practice organic growing practices using no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We grow German extra hardy garlic. It is an easy to grow great tasting garlic with a long storage capacity. It is a porcelain type variety with a white outer skin and a rose colored inner skin. In the garden it’s an aggressive large growing garlic with deep green leaves reaching 36” in height. The bulb itself when harvested at the end of its growth cycle can often be 3” in diameter. The bulbs will generally produce 6 large cloves but that may vary to growing conditions. Planted in October it withstands the cold temperatures well below zero and shows itself early in the spring to be the first riser in the garden.
This variety comes under the banner of few different names differing only in shade and size. German stiff-neck, Northern white, Music or whatever the farmer growing it decides to name it. I’ve been growing my particular strain for 17 years. Each fall saving the best bulbs to replant for next years crop. It is the only garlic I grow or have ever grown for that matter. It is disease free having never introduced a strange garlic to our field. This garlic is a standard bearer and will outgrow any other garlic in your garden. Thus the extra hardy.
